Active Directory Server is a directory service on Windows OS that facilitates work with network resources that are interconnected and complex and different in an integrated manner. Active Directory was originally released with Windows 2000 Server and was revised with additional features on Windows Server 2008.

Active Directory provides a common interface for managing and maintaining information related to resources that are connected to various network directories. Directories may be system-based (such as OS Windows), specifically applications or network resources, such as printers.

Active Directory functions as a single data store for fast data access to all users and controls access for users based on directory security policies. In computing, a servers can provide various functions, often called “services”, such as sharing data or resources among many clients, or performing calculations for clients. One server can serve many clients, and one client can use multiple servers.

The client process can run on the same device or can be connected via network to a server on a different device. The client sends a request to the server, which takes several actions and sends a response back to the client, usually with results or recognition. Pointing to a computer as a “server class hardware” implies that it is dedicated to running the server inside.

This often implies that it is stronger and more reliable than a standard personal computer, but as an alternative, large computing clusters can consist of many server components that are relatively simple and can be replaced. Active Directory is structured internally with a hierarchical framework. Each node in a tree-like structure is called an object and is associated with network resources, such as users or services.

Like the database topic scheme concept, the Active Directory scheme is used to determine the specified Active Directory attributes and types of objects, which facilitate the search for network resources that are connected based on the assigned attributes. For example, if a user needs to use a printer with color printing capabilities, object attributes can be arranged with appropriate keywords, making it easier to search the entire network and identify the location of objects based on those keywords.

The domain consists of objects stored within certain security limits and interconnected in a tree-like structure. One domain might have multiple servers – each of which can store many objects. In this case, organizational data is stored in many locations, so a domain can have multiple sites for one domain. Each site can have multiple domain controllers for backup and scalability reasons. Some domains can be linked to form domain trees, which share common schemes, configurations, and global catalogs (used to search across domains).

Forests are formed by a series of many and trusted domain trees and form the topmost layer of Active Directory. You use Active Directory Server Manager in Windows Server 2016 to manage core server installation options for Windows Server 2016, Windows Server 2012, and Windows Server 2008 R2 running on remote computers. Server Manager runs the option to install Core Core for Windows Server 2016.

A domain controller is a server that runs a version of the Windows Server® operating system and has installed Active Directory® Domain Services. In Windows Server 2003 and Microsoft Windows® 2000 Server, directory services are called Active Directory. In Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows Server 2008, service directories are called Active Directory Directory Services. The rest of this topic refers to AD DS, but the information also applies to Active Directory.

When installing Windows Server on a computer, you can choose to configure certain server roles for that computer. When you want to create a new forest, a new domain, or additional domain controllers in an existing domain, configure the server with the domain controller role by installing AD DS. By default, the domain controller stores a domain directory partition that consists of information about the domain where it is located, plus the schema and configuration directory partition for the entire forest.

Domain controllers are also special domain controller roles that perform certain functions in the AD DS environment. This particular role includes the global catalog server and operations master. The global catalog server on each domain controller saves the object for the domain where it is installed.

However, the domain controller designated as a global catalog server stores objects from all domains in the forest. For each object that is not in a domain whose global catalog server is authoritative as a domain controller, a limited set of attributes is stored in a partial domain replica. Therefore, the global catalog server stores a replica of the full domain that can be written alone (all objects and all attributes) plus a read-only replica of part of each other domain in the forest. Global catalogs are created and updated automatically by the AD DS replication system.

The object attributes that are replicated to the global catalog server are the attributes most likely to be used to find objects in AD DS. Attributes that are replicated to the global catalog are identified in the scheme as partial attribute sets (PAS) and are defined by default by Microsoft. However, to optimize search, you can edit the scheme by adding or removing attributes stored in the global data catalog and features of the Active Directory Server.
