Almost every version of IIS is released side by side or with the Microsoft Windows version: IIS 1.0 was released as a free addition to Windows NT 3.51. IIS 2.0 is included with Windows NT 4.0. IIS 3.0, which is included in Service Pack 2 from Windows NT 4.0, provides a dynamic script environment for Active Server Pages. This application introduces new MMC based management. IIS 5.0 shipped with Windows 2000, additional authentication methods, support for the WebDAV protocol, and an increase to ASP. IIS 5.0 also reduced support for the Gopher protocol.

IIS version 5.1 was shipped with Windows XP Professional, and is almost identical to IIS 5.0 on Windows 2000. Adding IIS 6.0, including with Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, supports IPv6 support and includes new worker process models that enhance security as well as reliability . IIS 7.0 is a complete IIS redesign and rewrite, shipped with Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008. IIS 7.0 includes a new standard design that allows reduced surfaces and high performance.

It also introduces a hierarchical configuration system that allows for simpler site placements, management applications based on new Windows models, new command line management options and increased support for the .NET Framework. IIS 7.0 does not limit Vista to the number of permitted connections like IIS in XP, but limits concurrent requests to 10 (Windows Vista Ultimate, Business, Company Edition), or 3 (Vista Home Premium).

Queues are placed in additional requests, which hinder performance, but are not rejected as in XP. IIS 7.5 is included in Windows 7 (but must be run on the side panel of Programs and Features) and in Windows Server 2008 R2. IIS 7.5 improves WebDAV and FTP modules and command line management in PowerShell. It also provides TLS 1.1 and TLS 1.2 support, best practice analysis tools and isolation processes for application collections.

IIS 8.0 in Windows 8 includes SNI (SSL binding for host names instead of IP addresses), application configuration, centralized SSL certificate support, and multicore measurements on NUMA devices, among new features others. This version includes Handle-Idle pages, dynamic site activation, increased logging, ETW logging, and automatic Rebind. IIS 10.0 version 1607 is a.k.a. Version 10.0.14393 in Windows Server 2016 2016-09-26 and Update Anniversary Windows 10 version 2016-08-02.

This version includes support for HTTP / 2, running IIS in a Windows container on the Nano Server, a new Application Management API for convenience management, a GUI-based Web user interface, and a Wildcard Host header. Version 10.0 of IIS 10.0 is included in Windows Server, version 1709 (semi-annual channels), and updates to Windows 10 Fall Creators released in 2017-2017.

This version adds support for HSTS, container enhancements, new cmdlets to connect sites, and four new server variables beginning with “CRYPT”. Version 10.0 of IIS 10.09 includes a.k.a. version 10.0.17763 in Windows Server 2019 Update and Windows 10 October 2018-10-02. This release adds control flags for HTTP / 2 and OCSP per site, compression APIs, and application modules that support the gzip and brotli schemes, and user interfaces for configuring HSTS.

Microsoft IIS Express

Microsoft IIS Express, a lightweight version (4.5-6.6MB) of IIS, is available as a standalone free server and can be installed on Windows XP with Service Pack 3 and newer versions of Microsoft Windows. IIS 7.5 only supports HTTP and HTTPS protocols. This is portable, saves its configuration based on per user, and does not require administrative rights and attempts to avoid conflicts with the web server on the same machine.

IIS Express can be downloaded separately or as part of WebMatrix or Visual Studio 2012 and newer versions. (In Visual Studio 2010 and earlier, web developers who developed ASP.NET applications using ASP.NET Development Server, with the code name “Cassini”) by default, IIS Express only serves local traffic. IIS Remote Administration is an easy-to-use tool for your web server administrator when you have multiple servers to manage. This feature will give you trouble for “remote desktop” every server every time you need to touch IIS.

With Microsoft IIS Manager remotely, you can log in to one server for example, then configure IIS Manager with a connection to another server that you manage. Or depending on the security of your organization, you can even configure IIS Manager on your workstation and connect to another server from there. This becomes very useful if your organization has an additional security layer such as binary authentication to secure Remote Desktop access in Microsoft IIS.
